Dynamics AX High Tech Implementation Methodology

The key to understanding the implementation methodology for the Dynamics AX High Tech solution is to first understand the philosophy behind Dynamics AX's architecture. After learning from the shortcomings of other ERP applications, the developers of Dynamics AX aimed to design a solution that would be able to encapsulate and identify the owner of every customization made to the system within layers, in order to ensure a smooth upgrade process.

Layer Name Layer Description
(SYS)
System
Core application layer controlled and maintained solely by Microsoft Business Solutions. The application objects in the standard application can never be deleted.
(GLS)
Global Solutions
Application modules such as: Shop Floor Control, Human Resource management, etc.
(DIS)
Distributor
Country-specific functionality, developed locally by Microsoft in between two releases.
(LOS)
Local Solution
Strategic local solution that has been included locally by Microsoft. Solution examples: Payroll, EDI
(BUS)
Business Solution
Vertical and horizontal solutions developed by partners for distribution to other partners and customers using the BUS layer.
(VAR)
Value Added Reseller
Development done by the partner for a specific customer.
(CUS)
Customer
Layer to encapsulate any development done in-house by the customer.
(USR)
User
User specific changes including form layout and reports via the report wizard.

The Dynamics AX High Tech module has been developed natively within the (BUS) Business Solution layer of Dynamics AX. The power of utilizing this layered architecture is in being able to take advantage of a fully integrated solution--no third party applications, while never affecting the source code.

This approach allows you to peel back layers during the upgrade process to apply future releases over the clean source layers, guaranteeing that you will never get stuck on a release. All of the modifications that were made in the BUS, VAR, CUS, and USR layers are then reapplied.
